Kidz Kamp wk. 6

Weather/Seasons Theme
When the kids first came in, we made a brown hand print to use later. We then read Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and went over some facts. We learned the sun is in fact bigger than Earth. That tiny dot Brittany is pointing to is Earth in relation to the sun!
We talked about how the Earth tilts on its axis as it orbits around the sun, which is what causes the seasons to change. We also learned about temperature and what it means when the temperature rises or falls. We then talked about Winter and hibernation while we cut out snowflakes. If you buy scissors, don't buy cute ones. I bought 5 animal ones and they can't cut through more than one sheet of paper at a time. We ended up having to bust out fancy scissors as well as take turns.
Spring time, when many flowers grow and baby animal's are born! We played a flower dice game. This is a great quick and easy family game. Roll two dice and either add or subtract the two to get your answer. Color in the petal which has that answer on it. Whoever gets their flower colored in first is the winner! This team just rolled a 12 and are coloring in the center of the flower with the number 12 on it. You can easily draw up one of these yourself.
We also had a couple of weather experiments we did. We held a pan of ice over a pan of boiling water and made rain. The pan of ice is a cool cloud. The heat from the Earth rises to the clouds making them grey and full of moisture...then it rains. We also talked about thunderstorms and how they form when warm wet air meets cool dry air and they fight and push each other around making thunder. During some thunderstorms, a tornado can occur if the warm air and cool air chase each other around in circles forming a funnel. We made a tornado using pop bottles.
It was Summer Snack Time! We made homemade ziploc bag ice cream while we talked about Summer facts. This is so quick, easy and yummy! Put 1.5 T Sugar, 1/4 t Vanilla, 1/2 c Milk (or half and half) into a small bag and seal (you can double the recipe and it will still fit in small bag). Put small bag (no more than two) inside of a gallon size bag of ice and rock salt. Shake if for 7-10 mins until it firms up. The gallon bag gets really cold so I had to wrap a hand towel around it.You can also put a bag inside a round container filled with ice and then roll it. It worked fine with only one serving in the small bag, but if there were two servings in a bag, there was not enough room for enough ice inside the small coffee container, so it didn't really get real firm. A bigger container would work better. Condensation will occur so you will have to dry your floor afterward or do it outside!
It was then time for Fall. Animals prepare for hibernation by gathering a lot of food and the leaves change colors and start to fall. We glued colored leaves on our hand print tree (thank you SSS Me Books for this fall idea!). I will have my kids write down their favorite summer activities onto the leaves so we can remember them before they blow away for the fall.
Busy busy day! We started a little late and scissors not working made things take a little more time than planned! Still a good day but this theme really could have used another 30 minutes since it was so much information. We didn't even get to learn our super cheesey song this week. Bummer!

I feel like I can conquer the world.

Every month since January, I have been making one scarf for Threads of Compassion. I started out by making plain double crochet scarfs. Very boring, but it was all I knew how to do. I feel like a pro now that I have made the Cadillac of crocheted scarves....I love love love it and it was super easy. I can't wait to make one for Avery. I actually made two this month and tried this new pattern as well... I really wanted to take this yarn and make a cap for Zane, but I didn't feel right about stealing donated yarn. I feel so dorkishy excited now...like I could possibly take on my grandma in a crocheting contest...hmm. That's an idea.

Randomness

I have been told only half of this post shows up. I am not sure why it isn't working. It's showing up when I use firefox but isn't when I use internet explorer. Maybe me editing it right now will make it work? If not...let me tell you...you arent missing anything! Kinda like the rest of my blog...

First I will start with my kids:
We went out to eat and Zane asks the waiter, "Do you do things God's Way or Your Way?!" It's been a month since VBS, but it lives on! He would also ask each time he walked by, "Is my food ready yet." "I'm still hungry..." "I. Want. My. Food."

I asked Avery how babies were made. She said "God uses magic...magical stuff?"

Zane drew a picture of a person today and I asked him what one part was...he said that's his conbelican cord and he's sad because the doctor's just cut it....

We just broke the news to Avery that cutting babies out of the tummy is not the only way. She was VERY concerned and asked "How does it come out down there??? How big does it get??" After showing her the size of only about a 1 pound baby...she said even more concerned "That is STILL really big???????" Oh dear. We moved on...

Now on to these questions going all around the blog world....

1. How often do you go over the speed limit? I use my cruise control ALWAYS and I set it at five over.
2. Do you dance like crazy when no one is looking? I will dance like crazy when people are watching if i'm in the mood! Usually when people aren't looking, I'm just laying down though.
3. If you were going to be stuck on a desert island, which book, movie, and CD would you take? Bible, Natalie Grant's Relentless, and I may need Dumb and Dumber in a desert island.
4. What did you get in trouble for as a kid? Pushing buttons and having the same personality as my mom!?
5. What really gives you the creeps? I second the pedophiles and spiders.
6. What was your favorite toy when you were a kid? I can not remember playing with toys?! I liked to draw though.
7. You run into a friend while shopping. Where were you? Can Starbucks be considered shopping?
8. When you fall asleep are you usually on your side, stomach, or back? I have to roll all over the place.
9. If fat or calorie intake weren't an issue, what food would you consume the most? It being an "issue" doesn't keep me away from my daily ice cream!! I mighy go back to eating Crisp N Tasty pizza everyday if I didn't know it'd kill me. That was my favorite growing up!
10. If you could hire one of the following, which would it be: Driver, chef, maid, stylist? Maid of course.
11. What movie have you watched the most? Probably Dumb and Dumber.
12. What perfume do you wear? I do not wear anything other than deodorant. I am all things opposite of the girls on perfume commercials. (2 days after posting this I was given Faith Hill perfume and have been wearing).
13. What was your favorite sitcom growing up? I liked Little House on the Prairie, Full House, and TFIG.
14. What were you doing the last time you had a really good laugh? Oh dear. After finishing the Story of Me book with Av, she wanted me to go through page by page and ask her a question to see if she remembered it. I asked "What is a girls.... called?" She said..."Oh I know this. Ummm...ummm....I think it's something Mexican?" What?!?!? Haha.
15. What was the very first concert I ever attended? I do not remember? I haven't been to very many.
16. Who is the 4th person on your missed call list? Brittany
17. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning? Most of the time 7 minutes. Enough time to shower and throw comfy clothes on. If i'm going to church and need to shower, do hair, makeup, and find something halfway decent...30 minutes.
18. When is the last time you went to the mall and what did you buy? When we had a girls night a couple of weeks before our Cancun trip. I bought a swim suit.
19. Ever go to camp? Yes love camp! Osage Christian Camp, Burnt Cabin, and Zenith at York and OC. I think that's it? Maybe more.
20. Do you collect anything? I used to collect stamps and cool rocks but now I just collect piles of laundry.

Kidz Kamp wk 5

Health and Fitness Theme
Timing ended up being perfect for this theme, because our church's Fitness Camp was going on this week as well. We started out by coloring different foods, cutting them out and gluing them on our Food Pyramid. I was expecting the kids to hurry and color fast but many took their time wanting to make it perfect, so no one actually finished! Then we went outside and played with a variety of things. Jump rope, soccer, scooter, bikes, we stretched, did jumping jacks, etc. We also had little races to the tree and back running, hopping, skipping, free choice. So funny how these siblings both skipped with their tongues hanging out!
I take such great quality pictures...
We read the Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food. We also learned several new vocabulary words like hygiene (dental and personal), nutrition, variety, moderation, food pyramid (and the different food groups). We also talked about what exercise does for our body.
They enjoyed a strawberry banana milkshake (or just plain strawberries) along with mixed nuts while I did a little Sugar Buzz science project using "blood" sugar and flour. One dissolves in our blood quicker making us silly but then quickly making us tired and hungry again. One dissolves much slower giving us energy for a lot longer and making our tummies feel full longer. We talked about which one would be better to eat before playing sports.
Here is an up close...
We sang Head Shoulder's Knee's and Toes, going faster and faster, making a great little workout for them!
I had an obstacle course all planned out including a balance beam, short gymnastics bar, hopscotch, punching gloves and bag, things to jump over and onto, but we ran out of time again! We only had a couple minutes left and they really wanted to go back outside, so we played a little bit more...They went home with a health/fitness related word search, cross word puzzle, and maze. I also made these magnetic laminated charts for them. When you eat something out of the food group listed, you get to color in that star with a dry erase marker. You can give little treats or plan a fun activity each day/week they color in all of their stars. This is Avery's chart. We haven't eaten a veggie yet. Apparently we circle as opposed to checking or crossing off the "Don't forget to move it" kid!
Every kid I kept today slept grrrreat! Now I need a nap.

Wilderness Drive Through Safari

This weekend, we took another quick trip. We went to stay the night with my sister in Arkansas and went to Gentry's little safari park. AMAZING! We got to play with kangaroos. This little baby jumped right into his mama when Zane came around! He tended to run and scare them!!
I was able to pet them though. They are SO soft. Zane giving this monkey bread
They had such tiny cute goats. I want one...
The fam...
Little baby donkeys. We walked around little cows and pigs kangaroo's and others, but for some reason these little donkey's were in cages.
So cute with the baby peeking out
Avery was not too sure about the baby tiger
Or the monkey's...they were pretty rowdy but Zane loved it. He touched them a lot and in this picture, he is giving the monkey his drum to play with!

I totally just wanted a picture of his butt. What in the world???
Pretty sure i've never seen a bull with a ring in his nose. I've sees cartoon pictures of this, but always wondered if people really do that to them...not sure why, but I guess they do!
Never seen a porcupine up close before. I really wanted to touch his quills but I resisted!
Now we hopped in our car and did the drive through part...These animals just come right up to your car. So fun!
This peacock was totally shaking his stuff for us.
I want to watch Bambi again. I don't even remember it.
Half horse half zebra
These were freaky looking ducks. Like their eyes or something. They looked possessed
I think zebra's are the prettiest animal ever
and these would be the ugliest...

This sucker was HUGE never seen such long horns...but I don't get out much...

That lazy hippo
Zane was soooo worn out! I'll end with one of Mr. Mason!!
Such a fun trip. I was definitely tired afterward. We drove 3 hours home shortly after the safari and then went and watched Toy Story 3 with Amy and Austen which ended at 10. The kids went nutso afterward so no one fell asleep before 11:00. Then I taught a baby class Sunday morning and had 4 hours of CR training (which was worth it!) and then went to BK that evening. I was falling asleep at BK. Ha. Now i'm up at 1am just because I can't fall asleep. Erg. I'm think tomorrow will be a Library Movie Day!

Some Tur-Bus Highs and Lows....

We had our first injury... Poor S broke her arm falling from this climbing wall...I can't believe it actually broke. I feel so bad. We have been here several times with no falls. I'm kinda paranoid to go back.

A high has been playing http://pbskids.org/island. Tons and tons of games and all of them Zane can do by himself! He could play for hours if I let him and he wants to do it everyday. You have to login each time but can add as many kids onto your account. Zane clicks on his name and goes to town. Each time you pass a level, you get to build to another ride to add to the island. There is a progress tracker and I see that Zane has eared 74 tickets and spent 53. His most frequently played game is Theo's puzzles. He has mastered rhyming, letter identification, alliteration, and letter sequencing. He is working on phonics, phonemic awareness, and hasn't gotten to reading/vocab yet. Love it and its Free!!

It's Things Said Thursday

I Can't think of anything Avery has said other than "Mommy can I go play with Bella and Tyndal?"

Z: I wish I could go to jail....
Me: Uh...why would you want to go there?
Z: Because I'm a good fighter!
(What???!?!!)

Britt: Zane, come drink your milk
Z: My brain had enough milk already

Britt: Zane, can you clean your room for me so then I can clean it?
Z: Hmm...Can I clean my room? No thank you.

Z: You know why I'm frustrated?
Me: Why?
Z: Because I don't want to take a nap and so I'm frustrated...
Me: Oh man (using my good sympathy skills). Well your brain will grow and be happy so just think about that instead!

Me: OMG...I just bought The God's Design For Sex book series. It was clearly time to snap out of denial...
You all: It's not as scary as it seems and your children will be perfect angels after reading this book to them. :)
Me: Ok. I think I can handle being a mom.....
